Begin with the sound. At Plitvice, water moves through a sequence of lakes and cascades, giving the forest a rhythm of its own. The famous views are only part of the experience: a quieter stretch of marked path, the colour beneath a boardwalk, a pause while the light changes. Choose your entrance and walking programme in advance, then give the visit the time it deserves.

The Gacka valley tells a different water story. At Majerovo vrilo, old mills recall the working life of a spring. Tonković vrilo offers another place to stop and look closely. These are living surroundings, where local access, river rules and the people who care for the landscape matter as much as the view.

Make Otočac part of the journey, with time for the Gacka Museum and the countryside beyond. You do not need to turn every stretch of water into an activity. Sometimes the better plan is simply to stay beside it a little longer.

Before you go

Swimming is not permitted in Plitvice Lakes National Park. Arrange river activities with local providers and follow current access rules.
